Chapter Fourteen

Saji sat just in front of the fire, placed in the centre of their council, her long dark legs crossed beneath her and her arms resting gently on her knees. The other fairies stood and watched as Saji slipped into her meditative state. Among them lay Harin, Tobias and Molly, sleeping peacefully in the bare patches of grass that surrounded the fire. Total silence fell around them as the power of the fungi took hold, and the fairies eagerly waited for their leader to share what she’d seen. Saji’s eyes were still closed, still lost to the dreamland.

‘Ahhh, Christ!’ yelled Molly as her ankle rolled over another rock. ‘Where are you taking me now?’ she called out to her younger self.

‘We must keep going – there’s more to see,’ replied the young girl.

As they delved further into the dense woodland, Molly’s shoes began to tear and fray, for they were designed for streetwear, simple tasks, definitely not woodland hiking.

‘See what?’ she snapped. ‘More of my memories, or Harin’s or Tobias’s? Why do I need to see this? I’ve lived it! I want to wake up from whatever nightmare this is!’ she barked.

‘Come,’ the young girl replied.

‘You don’t understand. I’m not from here.’ Molly puffed as she climbed over branches and moss-covered hills. The young girl turned, and her sweet expression soured to a firm quizzical one. Finally she had the little girl’s attention.

‘Where are you from, Molly Black?’ Her young voice broke and a stern, much older one bled through.

Molly paused. She hadn’t expected a response, much less a question. She pondered for a second, then decided to tell the truth, as she was speaking to an imaginary sleep-walking guide. What harm could it do?

‘London, in England. Besides, if you were really me, then you would know that! So that means you’re not me, so who the bloody hell are you?’ she finished with a bite in her voice.

The young girl’s hard lines turned into a serious frown.

‘No, I’m not you; I’m here to find out who you really are, Miss Black.’ The young girl no longer appeared sweet and joyous.

‘The woman, Saji, back in the woods, she called me Ada Gwyn. Why?’ The pair stood still now in between an array of trees, varying in size, colour, height and age.

‘What do you know of this woman?’ responded the little girl.

‘Not much,’ replied Molly. ‘Just that she started a war, got all dark and scary about a book and tried to Adolf Hitler Elbonhelm.’ She quickly adjusted her answer off her guide’s blank expression. ‘I mean, she’s not a very nice person. Power hungry.’

‘And all this time, you’ve never seen what she looks like? How do you expect us to believe you?’ asked the girl.

‘Us? Who’s us?’ asked Molly, more concerned now.

‘Us.’

The young girl’s features began to change. Her small pale legs stretched and darkened in colour to warm caramel, and her young, colourful clothing shifted into large leaves that sat precariously over an ever-growing body. Vines flourished up
